Barn Quilt Painting FAQs

How do I prepare for a class?

Before your class, send Jane the pattern you’d like to recreate and chosen board size (see pricing here).

For inspiration, Google "barn quilts" and you’ll find hundreds. Pinterest is also a fun place to look. Check out the barn quilts created by Jane and Wren’s Nest guests by visiting the online gallery.

What do I bring to my class?

The Wren’s Nest will supply your barn board, which is why you choose a size in advance.

Each person will need to bring:

*One roll of 24mm (narrow) green FROG TAPE. It’s very important that you use Frog Tape and not another brand to prevent your paint from pulling.

*Paint: Visit your local hardware store for sample sizes of latex paint. Sherwin Williams and Benjamin Moore paints are known to cover and perform well.

Before your class, Jane will prime your board. She will teach you how to grid your design and paint your board.

How do I know whether a design will be too hard for a beginner?

Send your design to Jane. She will let you know. And if you really love it and it’s a difficult board, you can always commission her to paint it for you or wait until your skills advance.

Will my board be ready to hang?

You will leave with hanging hardware attached to your new board. All boards except for 4x4s will have one coat of sealer for exterior use. You will be instructed on how to correctly apply sealer and which to buy before leaving. Exposed (exterior) boards require 4 coats of sealer.
